FIRED

In Ohio it is legal to fire someone if they are gay, lesbian, straight, bisexual, or transgender.

I believe this kind of discrimination is wrong.  Employers should base their decisions on job performance.  Most Ohio voters  agree (66%).
Business leaders also agree- many of Ohio's largest companies protect their own workers against discrimination.

Please support protections for all Ohioans and pass legislation that guarantees an equal playing field for everyone in housing, employment and public accommodations.

Vote for the Equal Housing & Employment Act

在俄亥俄州 Ohio State

Yesterday was another amazing day at our third annual Lobby Day for Equality.  And as you may know, the California Supreme Court overturned that state’s ban on marriage equality today, a monumental triumph for the pro-equality movement nationwide. Check out Equality Ohio’s statement on the decision here.

Today the California Supreme Court declared that "there can be no doubt that extending the designation of marriage to same-sex couples, rather than denying it to all couples, is the equal protection remedy that is most consistent with our state’s general legislative policy and preference".

Further stating that "limiting the designation of marriage to a union ’between a man and a woman’ is unconstitutional [in California] and must be stricken from the statute . . .".

Can you imagine how it must feel to be a Californian today? Don’t you want to know that feeling here in Ohio?

Just today, I received a reminder of just how much work we have to do before we experience anything like what is happening in California. Below you’ll see an Action Alert from the Ohio Christian Alliance about the Equal Housing and Employment Act (SB 305). They want their members to stop the bill from becoming law. According to them, this is “an effort masquerading under the charade of civil rights to advance the homosexual agenda and gain state recognition for their lifestyle.”

They are wrong. Yet, this is just the beginning of the attacks we’re going to hear. As a statewide community, we have to stand up to this type of misinformation if we ever want to experience what California is experiencing today. You know it, I know it, and two-thirds of Ohioans agree: Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity must end in Ohio. Passing SB 305 is the right thing to do.

Visit www.dowhatsrightohio.com to share your story and help us combat their lies.

Finally, when I got up this morning I had no plan to ask anyone for money today. Sometimes, plans have to change.  It is painfully clear it is going to take a lot of effort to pass SB 305.  We must counter the rhetoric of the Ohio Christian Alliance and we must have your support to do so.   Please consider a gift of $25, $50, or $100 today. Or consider providing on-going support with a monthly donation of just $10.  Every single contribution is appreciated and helps us do this important work.

Together, we will make sure Ohioans know the truth.

Thank you,

Lynne Bowman,

Executive Director

Subject: YOUR ACTION IS NEEDED. PHONE THE SENATORS ON THE COMMITTEE AND URGE THEM TO OPPOSE THIS SHAM CIVIL RIGHTS BILL

S.B. 305 HAS SECOND HEARING IN THE JUDICIARY CIVIL JUSTICE COMMITTEE.  YOUR ACTION IS NEEDED.  PHONE THE SENATORS ON THE COMMITTEE AND URGE THEM TO OPPOSE THIS SHAM CIVIL RIGHTS BILL

OCA President Chris Long stated the following in written testimony before the committee:"This bill seeks to provide a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. There is no evidence of endemic discrimination against individuals seeking employment in Ohio based on their sexual orientation. (睜眼說瞎話?) The legislation would needlessly have the state of Ohio designate those living homosexual, bisexual or cross dressing lifestyles as a protected class of citizens.

It would open Pandora's Box. Were this bill to become law, businesses may be compelled to provide restroom facilities accommodating transgender and cross-dressing individuals. Public schools may be forced to hire a man who dresses as a woman to be a 3rd grade teacher. Employers may have to provide costly medical benefits to pay for sex altering surgeries and treatments. This bill could ultimately be used to undermine and challenge our state's constitution, which recognizes marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

This is an effort masquerading under the charade of civil rights to advance the homosexual agenda and gain state recognition for their lifestyle. It is not necessary and only begs the question of why our elected representatives are squandering precious legislative business days on an issue such as this when the state's economy is in tatters. (拼經濟=合法罔顧人權?)

"Sexual Orientation as Defined by H.B. 502 and S.B. 305

(22) "Sexual orientation" means actual or perceived, heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, or gender identity and expression.
(23) "Gender identity and expression" means the gender-related identity, appearance, expression, or behavior of an individual regardless of the individual's assigned sex at birth.

Barry Sheets, Director of Governmental Affairs for Citizens for Community Values, one of the groups opposing S.B. 305, stated, "Lawmakers shouldn't be bullied by guilt and intimidation antics of homosexual activists. Failure to pass this bill is not granting permission to discriminate, as its proponents claim. To the contrary, passage of this bill would be discrimination against employers, property owners, and the majority of Ohioans, stripping them of their basic constitutional right to make decisions based on their deeply held religious convictions and common sense."

Ohio law currently bans bias in hiring, housing, or access to public accommodations based on race, color, religion, age, national origin, ancestry, disability, or familial status. This bill would add sexual orientation or gender identity to the list of protected statuses for hiring, housing, and access to public accomodations in the State of Ohio if enacted into law.

Call the members of the Senate Judiciary Civil Justice Committee.
