The Need to Pray

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
Although Christians all know the importance of praying because it is taught in the Holy Scripture that we should pray to God, there are still two types of frequently occurred cases when church people doubt about the need to pray.

郎咸平錯在哪裡?

昨天在某華人網友看到一篇署名郎咸平的文章選摘,題目為“大陸低工資高物價的秘密”。文中包括了如下一些內容:
1) 中國的高額稅收和通貨膨脹導致了中國的高物價;
2) 中國每出口一美元就要增發7元人民幣來平衡,目前中國外彙儲備大約2.3萬億美元,國內由此增發的人民幣超過16萬億遠,相當於2008年3.4萬億市場貨幣流量(M0)的近5倍,這些由出口結彙投放的巨額貨幣,全部以通貨膨脹的方式轉嫁到了老百姓頭上,造成老百姓手中貨幣的大幅度貶值,物價自然會相應大幅度上漲。
3) 所以,中國出口商品越多,賺取外彙越多,老百姓就越倒霉。如果中國不出口商品,而是用於國內百姓生活,既能夠提高人民生活水平,又不會發生對外財政補貼;或者退一步來說,如果中國出口商品白白送給外國,不收取美元,國內也就不會增發人民比,貨幣也不會貶值,中國老百姓的損失也會小一些。

總之,文章認為中國的問題在於把貨賣出去之後,把錢全進來留在國內花,因此導致物價大漲;如果把這些貨留在國內不出口,甚至白送給國外,都可以造出國民。

理工科生們對語言的誤解

理工生們常把在專業領域裡養成的語言習慣運用於日常生活的非專業領域。比如,說到能量,他們會想到可以進行定量計算因而符合能量守恆定律的各種物理能量;說到力,他們會想到牛頓力的計算;說到張力,他們會想到胡克;等等。之所以會這樣的一個原因是相關詞彙在自然科學的領域裡有著明確的定義或精准的計算公式,因而即便在學習相關的自然科學知識之前已經接觸過那些詞彙,一旦學了相關的自然科學知識之後,便會產生“哇,原來這才是這些詞彙的真正意思”的豁然領悟的感覺。

Do not limit God

“Do not limit God” was the subject of the sermon given by pastor Wommack when he came to our church in the summer of 2017 as invited by the late pastor Demola. Although his message had some prophetic significance, the content was still quite limited in the sense that he was encouraging boldness only in the domain of nowadays so-called typical church activity, which basically involves how to build and expand the local churches through the familiar activities that people in this world would easily label as church activity.

巴門尼德與赫拉克裡特

自黑格爾以來,過去一兩個世紀裡巴門尼德的有則恆有無則恆無與赫拉克裡特的永恆變化常被作為一對邏輯的對立面來進行對比。近來有人想將二者統一起來【1】 ,提出“巴門尼德所說的‘同一’與赫拉克利特所說的‘流變’”是存在的“一體兩面和相互轉化”的說法。這樣的說法乍聽起來似乎解決了巴門尼德與赫拉克裡特之間的對立,其實仍然停留在文字游戲的層面上,最多不過是重復了黑格爾的存在與無的對立統一的思維而已,因為這種所謂的新理論中並沒有看出巴門尼德的存在與赫拉克裡特變化的各自的適用範圍,因而將二者仍置於同一背景下來論述,因此在本質上那兩種理論仍是對立著的兩個面。

A closed-door game

If someone tells us that it is very hard for an ordinary people to understand what a philosopher talks about, it would not be surprising, since philosophers are supposed to be more thoughtful and profound than ordinary people. But if professional philosophers tell us that they have problems to understand what other people talk about ordinary things happening in the world or write about philosophically meaningful issues, as long as not in the language that they feel comfortable with or not about the topics that they feel familiar with, then this world needs to worry about the capacity of the professionals of philosophy.

Tao Te Ching --- The most misunderstood classic in the world

The Tao Te Ching is a Chinese ancient text, one of the famous classics of the world. It is often called simply Lao Tzu (also Laozi or Lao-Tze) after the name of its author. . It’s a book discussing the Tao and the Te, and it is divided into 81 chapters; the first 37 chapters are also called the Tao Ching, and the next 44 chapters the Te Ching. Although in modern Chinese, Tao and Te have been combined into one word TaoTe (道德) to stand for morality or ethics, in the book of Tao Te Ching, they are two closely related separate terms. The Tao literally means “way”, but is of a dual meaning of “the knowledge of the truth” and “the ultimate energy in the universe” in the book, and the Te is the fundamental attribute (or virtue) of the Tao, which is of behavioral significance, in addition to the cognitive and physical significances.
The Tao Te Ching is the most translated classic in the world over the past couple of millenniums. Today if you go online to search for “Tao Te Ching” or “Lao Tzu” or “Laozi” or “Lao-Tze” or “道德经” or “老子”, you could find thousands different versions of translation of the Tao Te Ching in many different languages, mostly in English, and then in Chinese (the original language of the Tao Te Ching). Although the Bible is the most printed book, but the translation of the Bible is very restricted, the same for other religious books, and thus the Tao Te Ching somehow becomes the most translated classic, or even the most translated book, in the world.
Unfortunately and ironically, the Tao Te Ching is also at least one of the most misunderstood classics, if not the most misunderstood, in both western and eastern history.

Why do we need to talk about the devil?

We need to talk about the devil because the devil is real, and the devil keeps seducing people to sin and keeps hurting the children of God in an effort of stop them from growing in God with their confessed faith. Moreover, the devil would try his best to make any yeast of sin in a person to ferment into a severe spiritual filth, and the devil often acts in sneaky ways so that it is not always easy to identify the schemes of the devil. Meanwhile, it has been proved in the history that it does help people to reject the lies of the devil when they could clearly identify the lies or to defiantly battle the abusive life situations when they are aware that the devil is behind the abuses.

Does the devil help us with persecutions?

It would sound simply wrong or even ridiculous to most people if all of a sudden someone says from a crowd that the devil is helping us by hurting us. Nonetheless, it is a very popular saying among Christians, especially among preachers. So much often we might hear some preachers tell us to love the tragedies, to love the hardships of life, or simply to love the persecutions of the devil, because they think that those bad things could make us better.

我在不同的華人網站貼出“請一起來給黑格爾找錯”一文後,收到幾個評論,但似乎沒有人注意到我的那篇文章中點出的一個重點:不要迷信專業哲學界的權威人士,因為正如我的那篇文章所舉的例子表明的,專業哲學界(不論中西)的權威們(不論多有名)經常讀不懂別人的文章。黑格爾和老子的文章屬於那些權威們經常讀不懂的比較典型的例子,盡管黑格爾和老子的文章如果能靜下心細讀的話其實是非常通俗易懂的!

God’s discipline versus the devil’s persecution

The devil is waging a war against us Christians and thus we need to be alert to the devil’s dirty tricks and fight against the devil’s persecutions. However, when we talk about the persecutions from the devil we would inevitably face the issue of the discipline from God. The comparison between the devil’s persecutions with God’s disciplines is no doubt a theological topic that could cause a heated debate among nowadays Christians, but is also undoubtedly something that would stay at the bottom of hearts of most Christians, or even many nonbelievers, as long as they could not get a satisfactory answer to it.

The almighty power of God and the limitations of the devil

We need to be alert to the devil’s plots because the devil works very hard and sneakily to hurt humans, especially to hurt us Christians since we are his enemies, as pointed out in 1 Peter 5:8 “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” But on the other hand, we are all undoubtedly assured that we are protected by our Lord Jesus, and our Lord will always prevail in the battles against the devil.

God's blessing and blessings for us

It is very important for each child of God to focus on God instead of specific good things in life, as we are taught by our Lord Jesus, “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:31-33). That’s our principle, and our hope of life as well, which directs us to our fundamental blessing from God.

翻譯中的創造

常言道“科學無國界”,這背後的一個重要原因是基於數學及代碼符號的科技語言在不同的自然語種之間進行翻譯時基本不會失去其原意;即便是偶有失真之處,科學的數字記錄及相關的數學邏輯和實驗環境及步驟的設計也可以將自然語言中的失真糾正過來,甚至幫助自然語言發展出滿足科學精准性的詞彙來。

鄧曉芒對“自我意識與我思”的誤解

The Narrow Path of Humility

The general idea of humility could be manifested in many ways, and the most fundamental one for Christians should be “Humble yourselves before the Lord.” (James 4:10) because “Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.” (Proverbs 22:4). In general, being humble in heart, in contrast to being haughty in heart, by learning from our Lord Jesus as is commanded in Matthew 11:29 should be a basic personal quality of each Christian. Accordingly, among the children of God, we should “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” (Ephesians 4:2).
