Our civilization has behaved like an overslept student who missed the morning class in school, in the sense that, after the nonlinear era began, we as a civilization missed the opportunity of entering the era of the 2nd order philosophy at least one century ago, due to a crisis within the professional discipline of philosophy, which is not resolvable within that discipline as attested by the history.

Why do we need to talk about the devil?

We need to talk about the devil because the devil is real, and the devil keeps seducing people to sin and keeps hurting the children of God in an effort of stop them from growing in God with their confessed faith. Moreover, the devil would try his best to make any yeast of sin in a person to ferment into a severe spiritual filth, and the devil often acts in sneaky ways so that it is not always easy to identify the schemes of the devil. Meanwhile, it has been proved in the history that it does help people to reject the lies of the devil when they could clearly identify the lies or to defiantly battle the abusive life situations when they are aware that the devil is behind the abuses.

Does the devil help us with persecutions?

It would sound simply wrong or even ridiculous to most people if all of a sudden someone says from a crowd that the devil is helping us by hurting us. Nonetheless, it is a very popular saying among Christians, especially among preachers. So much often we might hear some preachers tell us to love the tragedies, to love the hardships of life, or simply to love the persecutions of the devil, because they think that those bad things could make us better.

我在不同的華人網站貼出“請一起來給黑格爾找錯”一文後,收到幾個評論,但似乎沒有人注意到我的那篇文章中點出的一個重點:不要迷信專業哲學界的權威人士,因為正如我的那篇文章所舉的例子表明的,專業哲學界(不論中西)的權威們(不論多有名)經常讀不懂別人的文章。黑格爾和老子的文章屬於那些權威們經常讀不懂的比較典型的例子,盡管黑格爾和老子的文章如果能靜下心細讀的話其實是非常通俗易懂的!

God’s discipline versus the devil’s persecution

The devil is waging a war against us Christians and thus we need to be alert to the devil’s dirty tricks and fight against the devil’s persecutions. However, when we talk about the persecutions from the devil we would inevitably face the issue of the discipline from God. The comparison between the devil’s persecutions with God’s disciplines is no doubt a theological topic that could cause a heated debate among nowadays Christians, but is also undoubtedly something that would stay at the bottom of hearts of most Christians, or even many nonbelievers, as long as they could not get a satisfactory answer to it.

The almighty power of God and the limitations of the devil

We need to be alert to the devil’s plots because the devil works very hard and sneakily to hurt humans, especially to hurt us Christians since we are his enemies, as pointed out in 1 Peter 5:8 “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” But on the other hand, we are all undoubtedly assured that we are protected by our Lord Jesus, and our Lord will always prevail in the battles against the devil.

God's blessing and blessings for us

It is very important for each child of God to focus on God instead of specific good things in life, as we are taught by our Lord Jesus, “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:31-33). That’s our principle, and our hope of life as well, which directs us to our fundamental blessing from God.

翻譯中的創造

鄧曉芒對“自我意識與我思”的誤解

簡單而深刻的哲學警句往往可以引起人們延續百年甚至千年的誤解。在中國,這方面典型的例子很容易從老子的《道德經》中找出,而在西方,比較典型的則屬笛卡爾的“我思故我在”這句名言了。直到今天,中西方哲學界不但在對這句話仍存在著五花八門的解讀,即便是對其中的“我思”二字的理解也常會令人錯愕。前兩天在微信公眾號裡讀到一篇在當今中國哲學界首屈一指的名人鄧曉芒談論康德的一篇文章【1】,對於文章整體的論述我這裡暫且不談,僅就其中一個小細節,即該文對於康德對笛卡爾的“我思”二字的評論之評論來略作簡評。

The Narrow Path of Humility

The general idea of humility could be manifested in many ways, and the most fundamental one for Christians should be “Humble yourselves before the Lord.” (James 4:10) because “Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.” (Proverbs 22:4). In general, being humble in heart, in contrast to being haughty in heart, by learning from our Lord Jesus as is commanded in Matthew 11:29 should be a basic personal quality of each Christian. Accordingly, among the children of God, we should “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” (Ephesians 4:2).

歷史哲學的局限與公平史觀

按黑格爾的話說,歷史哲學就是對歷史的深思。其實,所謂歷史哲學與一般的歷史記錄或對歷史的各種反思之不同在於它試圖從歷史中看出文明發展的宏觀規律來,一旦得出這樣的宏觀規律再反過來幫助進一步認識一些過去理解不深的歷史現像,或對將來的歷史走向做出一些預測。但是,很顯然迄今為止的所有著名的有關歷史發展的宏觀規律都未能經得住歷史發展的檢驗,包括黑格爾自己的所謂歷史按著太陽升起的方向發展到太陽落下的方向的假說也顯然遇到嚴重的挑戰,因為他所認為的完美的君主制(Monarchy)在他之後不久就不復存在了。但是,他所說的個人的內心自由隨著歷史的前進而發展確實在世界各地以不同的形式在不同的程度上實現著。

How to identify the devil's act?

The devil is waging an all round war against humanity, especially against every child of God, in every aspect of life all around the world, as pointed out in 1 Peter 5:8 “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” Identifying the devil’s act in this war is not a trivial job, but a very difficult task. The fact that the devil acts in all kinds of disguise is of course a well-known difficulty of identifying the devil’s act, but what makes the task even more challenging is that the devil not only knows our human nature quite well but also can read our mind. Or in other words, it can exploit the deepest weakness in our heart (or mind).

今在網上看到有人轉載署名為左亦魯的發表於《讀書》2018年第8期的題為“兩粒未發芽的種子:《郵報》與五角大樓文件案”的文章,頗有感觸,特做一簡評。左文從國家安全與新聞自由之間的矛盾,及新聞自由和男女平等之間的張力這兩個角度對2017年由Steven Spielberg導演,Meryl Streep及Tom Hanks主演的電影“The Post”進行了評論。本文的著眼點只限於國家安全與新聞自由之間的矛盾這一點。

黑格爾歷史哲學簡介

黑格爾的《歷史哲學》為哲學愛好者們提供了一個了解以語言晦澀難懂而著稱的黑格爾哲學的捷徑。這不但是因為他的《歷史哲學》語言通俗易懂,並對世界歷史提出了他個人的非常獨到有趣而且很多時候又頗為深刻的見解(比如對中國歷史的獨特分析介紹【1,2】),更是因為那是他一生中最後的一部著作,因此他在其中對於他的哲學體系中一些基本概念的解釋可以被看作是他對自己的哲學概念的最終的解釋。本文將結合著對於他的歷史哲學的簡介來特別總結一下書中作為黑格爾哲學的最核心也是最特殊的概念,理念(Idea)及精靈(Spirit,經常譯作精神,但是在歷史中談精神不如精靈更為恰當。而這一點又可幫助我們了解他的其它著作中的Spirit的意思)的意義。

What is the devil trying to do?

We all know the devil is evil and the devil is a liar, but we might often feel confused about why the devil bothers to work so hard to do all those dirty and ugly things in this human world. This confusion could cause us to be heedless when facing the devil’s trickery. Billy Graham once mentioned[1] that the most successful trick of the devil is to make us believe it doesn’t even exist. The confusion about what the devil is really up to might also cause people even not to believe the existence of the devil.

最近讀了一篇關於自聖奧古斯丁到湯恩比的歷史哲學的綜述文章[1] ,對於湯恩比之後的歷史哲學,該文雖然只是抽像地對所謂的分析及批判性的歷史哲學進行了描述而沒有具體介紹,但是從該文的口氣看來,作者似乎以為歷史哲學發展到所謂的分析及批判歷史觀就到頭了。為此,我決定要對本人在過去幾年裡在公平分析研究[2] 中提出的公平史觀略做介紹。

Even though from time to time during sermons, when it comes to the subject of how to make behavioral or spiritual changes to become a better person, preachers might say something like “this is for every one of us, no exception”, but we could often find that preachers do not really consider their teachings of how to make changes would apply to themselves the same as to the audience. The expression of “this is for every one of us, no exception” usually is just for showing the importance and the extensive influence of the subject, not really for putting the preachers themselves in the same positions as the audience.
